雨すきですか？？僕はこの作品から好きになりました。日本人はかつて、雨を天からの貰い水として雨に趣を感じていたそうです。微妙な雨の違いを感じ取り、つけてきた情緒ある名前は400以上。そんな日本人が今、雨を厄介者に感じるようになってしまっていますよね。家事をこなす主婦は洗濯ものが乾かないといい、女子高生は湿気で髪がはねると苛立ち始める。決め込んだスーツは朝から濡れ、すぐ横を通る車に水をかけられる。現代の雨の街には、傘の下でうつむきがちに歩く人で溢れています。雨に趣を抱くという日本の文化が失われてしまいました。そんな雨の日にだけ美しく咲く花があるんです。サンカヨウ。この設計ではサンカヨウの原理を建築に応用することで雨の街を彩る住宅のファサードを考えました。
Do you like the rain? I came to appreciate it through this project.
In the past, Japanese people regarded rain as a gift from the heavens and found beauty and meaning in it. They were sensitive to its subtle variations, giving rise to more than 400 poetic names for different kinds of rain. Yet today, rain is often seen as a nuisance. Laundry won’t dry, high school girls get frustrated as humidity ruins their hair, carefully chosen suits are soaked from the morning, and passing cars splash onto pedestrians. Our cities on rainy days are filled with people walking hunched beneath their umbrellas, eyes cast downward. The cultural appreciation of rain in Japan has been fading.
But there is a flower that blooms beautifully only on rainy days: Sankayou (Diphylleia grayi). In this design, I applied the principle of the Sankayou to architecture, proposing a residential façade that brings color and meaning back to the rainy city.

雨の日にサンカヨウの花弁の透明度が上がるのは、花弁の凹凸に雨水が浸透し光が透過しやすくなるから。すりガラスはガラス面の片方だけにサンドブラスト加工を施すことで凹凸をつけ、光を散乱させることで乳白色のガラスになっています。今回の提案では加工面を外側にしたすりガラスで住宅を覆うことで、雨が降ると凹凸に雨水が入り、透明度が上がるようにしました。サンカヨウと同じ原理です。雨が降ると街に住民の趣味が滲み出し、街を賑やかに彩ってくれます。
The reason the petals of the Sankayou become more transparent in the rain is that water penetrates the microscopic irregularities on their surface, allowing light to pass through more easily.
Frosted glass, similarly, is created by applying sandblasting to one side of the glass to produce fine that scatter light, giving it a milky appearance. In this proposal, the housing façade is clad with frosted glass with the textured surface facing outward. When it rains, water fills , increasing the glass’s transparency—just like the Sankayou.
As the rain falls, the lives and personal tastes of the residents begin to softly emerge through the façade, bringing vibrancy and new expression to the city.
